The Night Cap is based on the hugely popular Cloud with the same innovative zipless opening with oversized comforter really works especially for people who move around during the night, people looking for extra room and quick temperature control.
Sierra Designs says:
The Night Cap is a more affordable, responsibly made version of our award-winning Cloud sleeping bag for off-the-grid adventure seekers who need a better insurance policy in wet weather while still packing down to a backpack-friendly size. Made with 100% recycled synthetic insulation from water bottles and wrapped in a recycled, post-industrial fabric shell, the Night Cap integrates a zipperless, oversized comforter and a sleeping pad sleeve for a bed system that’s as cozy as home and offers more freedom for stretching out than traditional mummy bags. Features like insulated shoulder pockets ensure warm air doesn’t escape, but hot sleepers rest assure: the self-sealing foot vent provides the perfect environment, no matter how cool you like it.
Our Verdict
Sierra Design's Night Cap is the synthetic fill version of the unique Cloud 800 sleeping bag. There are a number of practical features that you only truly appreciate once you're using the bag. The zipless, quilt style opening that wraps around you seems like a gimmick until you get to enjoy how easily you can get in and out of it. The opening has an oversized comforter which acts like a quilt so you can really wrap yourself up in it if the temperatures drop. Alternatively you can quickly and easily open it up to dump heat if you're too hot.
Sierra Designs use something called 'Temperature Mapping' in this sleeping bag. This is when they use less insulation on the back of the sleeping bag and add sleeves to attach your sleeping mat in place. This may seam strange but by keeping your mat securely in place it will keep you just as comfortable and warm, replacing the unnecessary bottom insulation, thus saving you weight. The best aspect of the bag for me personally is the self sealing foot vent. I get hot feet so restrictive mummy bags are often uncomfortable due to feet that are overheating. On the Cloud you can easily slide your feet out of the vent on the bottom to cool off or just let air in. Due to the placement of the vent and the overlapping materials, as soon as your feet are inside there no chance of cold air getting in or your feet accidentally getting out. An ingenious design feature.
This version has 1134g of SierraLoft Eco Synthetic Insulation that has a -5°C Comfort Limit so its good for two to three season use, particularly if you're a warm sleeper. The fabrics used are 20D so they are lightweight but also more durable than many of the lightest bags out there. The dimensions of the bag are generous so it would suit someone after a larger bag, someone who moves around a lot at night and warm sleepers. The overall weight is really impressive given all the features too.
