A dependable shell layer that balances breathability, protection, and weight.
Rab says:
Compact in your pack and quick to deploy in a storm, the Downpour Mountain Pants are a staple on your kit list for demanding hikes, treks, and scrambles. Engineered with 2.5-layer Pertex® Shield and excellent knee articulation, they offer a finely tuned balance of low weight, mobility, and durability that’s ideal for tackling more technical terrain and unpredictable weather.
Our Verdict
The updated Rab Downpour Mountain 2.5L Pants sit in that sweet spot between all-day comfort and pack-ready insurance. At 265g (UK12), they’re light enough to disappear until needed, but the full-length side zips mean you won’t be fumbling them over boots mid-downpour, and they can be used to vent some heat on intense climes. The Pertex Shield fabric holds up well in prolonged rain, with enough breathability to avoid the boil-in-the-bag feel on steeper climbs.
Knee articulation is noticeably well-executed, allowing for movement across uneven or scrambling terrain. The waistband sits securely without feeling restrictive, though I wish for a simple pocket for quick-access items.
