Streamlined and breathable, this wind-resistant core layer disappears when you don’t need it and adds a layer of protection when you do.
Rab says:
Our bestselling multi-activity softshell vest is back, now built with a recycled fabric and offering unbeatable breathability and wind resistance without the bulk of sleeves. The stretchy Matrix™ fabric allows freedom of movement for tackling tough ascents, while drying quickly and moving moisture from the inside out when you’re working up a sweat. Lightweight, packable, and incredibly versatile, this all-mountain vest is at home whether you're running a windy ridgeline, ski touring, or scaling a rockface.
Our Verdict
The Rab Borealis Vest weighs 153g (UK12) and uses Rab’s Matrix fabric, offering enough wind protection without sacrificing airflow. It’s ideal for fast-paced walking, cool starts or breezy summits where a full jacket would be too much. The stretch is excellent, and the slim fit stays put without riding up or feeling restrictive under a pack.
Two chest pockets are mesh-lined and sit high enough to stay usable with a hipbelt. The elasticated armholes and hem are low-profile but effective at sealing out gusts. The fabric dries quickly and doesn’t feel clammy, even when working hard. I’ve appreciated how quiet and supple it is compared to a standard wind jacket.
