Our Verdict
The Montbell Trekking Umbrella 50 is lightweight and sturdy, providing versatile protection from the elements. Weighing just 155g, it's an ultralight addition to any pack, town bag, or handbag that doesn't compromise coverage or durability.
With a generous 88cm diameter when open, this umbrella offers shelter from sudden rain showers or intense sun. The 20-denier polyester ripstop canopy with a repellent finish effectively sheds water while maintaining its shape, ensuring reliable performance in various conditions.
The carbon fibre ribs provide an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, contributing to the umbrella's durability without adding unnecessary bulk. When not used, it collapses to a compact 24cm, easily fitting in most backpack side pockets or its included case.
I would not use it in place of a dedicated hiking umbrella; this is more of an “in case of emergency” product. Its small size means it can slip into any day bag or handbag.
