Our go-to glove for technical alpine adventures in cold weather, the Black Diamond Soloist glove combines a BD.dry™ waterproof insert with an Empel DWR on the shell and a long gauntlet cuff for complete weather protection. The shell can be used alone on warmer days, while the insulated liner, filled with PrimaLoft Gold Cross Core, dries quickly, and insulates even when wet. The reinforced goat leather palm stands up to rocky terrain, repeated rope handling and the wear and tear associated with dedicated mountain use.
Our Verdict
The Black Diamond Soloist Gloves are a solid choice for technical alpine adventures in cold conditions, offering both versatility and durability. With a BD.dry waterproof insert and PFC-free DWR treatment, these gloves excel in wet, snowy environments. The insulated liner, filled with PrimaLoft Gold Cross Core, can be removed and worn as an individual layer; though they do not have any fastenings, they can feel a little loose when worn on their own. The liner’s fast-drying nature and ability to insulate when damp are significant advantages on long, challenging routes. The pre-curved fingers offer a more natural hand position that reduces fatigue when worn for long periods.
The reinforced goat leather palm is built to handle rough surfaces and rope work, making these gloves reliable for serious mountain use. Black Diamond has also considered dexterity, with a fleece-lined, stretch shell allowing unrestricted movement. The gauntlet cuff is well-designed to keep snow out, while the liner provides warmth down to -26 °C, though I haven't tested them at this temperature.
