The Comfort Plus XT is an incredibly comfortable mat that uses two types of insulation to push up the R-value rating whilst using a dual-chamber design where each layer can be dialled into your specific comfort level.

Our Verdict
This incredibly comfortable mat; uses a different support structure to most other mats, "air spring cells", which have more of a quilted pattern and support and conform to your body better than horizontal or vertical baffles. This results in me having a much better night's sleep.
Internally the mat uses both a heat-reflective fabric and Thermolitea, which is a synthetic insulation, to give the mat an R-Value of 4.7
uniquely, the top (the part you lay upon) and the bottom (in contact with the ground) of the pad's firmness can be adjusted; each section has its own valve. This is a bit of a gimmick, but it may work for you; for me, it adds weight unnecessarily.
It is a bit heavy for me to be taking backpacking, but if you value a good night's sleep over a lighter pack, this is an excellent choice of mat.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
