The Ortlieb Back-Roller 40L Panniers are a great choice for commuting and touring. They are well designed, very well built and highly durable. As usual, the high quality waterproof materials used are effective and perform well in any conditions you might encounter.
Ortlieb says:
Durable polyester fabric make this pannier a long lasting touring companion. The waterproof roll closure ensures safe and waterproof storage of food and equipment. With its QL2.1 fixing it is quickly mounted and taken off the bike rack. A shoulder strap provides carrying comfort when taken off the rack.
Advice: The Back-Roller and Front-Roller (except City-Line models) can be combined with the ORTLIEB Rack-Pack on the rear rack for waterproof transport of tent, sleeping bag and mattress.
Our Verdict
Ortlieb's Back-Roller 40L has the traditional Ortlieb look with heavy duty PVC covering the panniers. This still looks great but does carry some extra weight compared to the Back-Roller Plus (also 40L). This compromise lowers the price without affecting the durability which is actually greater. These panniers hold a significant amount of kit and if you are careful with your distribution (keeping it even) you can keep a smooth ride. The mounts are easy to use and fully adjustable.
The roll top lid makes access quick and easy. They come with an attachable shoulder strap and also have a couple of internal pockets, one smaller zipped mesh pocket to keep things organised. These have been really practical packs for commuting and the quality of the Ortlieb construction means that you never worry about the contents being exposed to poor weather.
