The Jannu is at home in high alpine environments and campsites alike. A smaller footprint and single vestibule reduce the weight while the three pole design and quality materials provide all the strength and durability you would need from a true four season tent.

Hilleberg says

The Jannu was designed to be an alpine climbing and mountaineering tent. Its compact footprint shines in limited-space sites, such as knife-edge ridges and small ledges, and it is very stable, even in high winds. Yet it is also easily light enough for use on long or short trips where low weight is a high priority. So, while the Jannu’s strength and light weight has made it the tent of choice for alpine mountaineers, its excellent snow-loading resistance have made it extremely popular with winter campers, hunters, and high altitude trekkers.

Its light weight and self-supporting structure have also attracted many long distance backpackers and paddle tourers. And, since it is quite strong and spacious yet also very light, solo adventurers expecting especially challenging conditions favor the Jannu, as well.

Our Verdict

Hilleberg's Jannu 2 Person Tent was primarily designed as an alpine tent with a small footprint but it is much more versatile and works well anywhere you'd expect to encounter challenging conditions. The single vestibule is large enough to store all your kit and the inner space is generous for two people. It is essentially a dome tent but with an additional pole providing more crossing points and therefore more strength for the snow and wind it might encounter. With only the two pegging points for the vestibule required it is close to being freestanding and this certainly helps on technical terrain.

This tent is really strong for its weight and it has been perfect for epic winter trips into the Cairngorms through to easy summer outings. Admittedly, I tend to use this more when I know the conditions are going to be poor as it is quick and easy to pitch and provides the strength to counter any conditions I've camped in so far. The poles, fabric, zips and inner all look as good as new after a good amount of use and I would expect this tent to last a lot longer than any of my other lightweight shelters.

The details in the design, materials used and quality of construction result in a fantastic tent. Hilleberg focus their designs on quality, durable tents that provide shelter from the worst conditions. They use a label system to differentiate their tents and intended uses. The Jannu falls into the Red Label category which are: ideal for trips in any season where lighter weight is the priority and are quite capable of standing up to challenging terrain and conditions.

Features

  • Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric and 9mm poles make for a very lightweight yet supremely stable tent.
  • All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.
  • Dome construction with multiple pole crossing points provide outstanding snow-load handling capability.
  • A good amount of room for two occupants and their gear.
  • Linked but seperable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.
  • Self-supporting dome design requires only the vestibules to be pegged, and the straightforward short sleeve and clip pole system make for quick, easy set up.
  • A single entrance and vestibule afford easy access and plenty of storage space, but keep the weight very low.
  • An optional footprint covers the entire area of the outer tent, including the vestibules. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching (sold separately).
  • The outer and inner tents can be used separately. Pitching the inner tent alone requires optional pole holderes (sold separately).
