The Kaitum 3/Helags 3 Mesh Inner Tent is a warm weather shelter from insects that can be used alone, with a Tarp, or integrated into the Hilleberg Kaitum 3 or Helags 3 Tents.

Hilleberg says:

Warm weather shelter from insects that can be used alone, with a Tarp, or integrated into its complement model.

Our Mesh Inner Tents are a simple, highly versatile option for use in dry, warm conditions. Used alone, their full mesh walls provide not only maximum airiness and protection from flying and crawling insects, but also 360° views.

The Mesh Inner Tents can also be used with the outer tents of their complement models (Akto; Allak 2 & 3; Anjan & Anjan GT 2 & 3; Enan; Helags 2 & 3; Kaitum 2 & 3; Nallo & Nallo GT 2, 3, & 4; Nammatj & Nammatj GT 2 &3; Niak; Rogen; Soulo; Soulo BL; Staika; and Unna): simply disconnect the standard inner tent and button in the appropriate Mesh Inner Tent.

When used in combination with a Tarp, the Mesh Inner Tents retain all of their venting and viewing advantages while the Tarp provides protection from rain or shade from the sun.

Our Verdict

A well quoted statistic is that a fabric inner tent adds about 5 degrees to the temperature versus outside - of course that depends on quite a few factors and relies on the body heat from the person inside but as a statistic we don't think its far away. A fabric inner also blocks wind and spindrift, both of which can be severe problems during bad weather.

Its no surprise then that with Hilleberg's reputation for making highly weather proof tents that they generally come with fabric inner tents. However the same properties that retain heat inside the tent in winter can be a problem in hotter climates when you are trying to dump heat and the tent vents simply aren't doing anything. In these conditions a mesh inner tent makes a huge difference, even a slight breeze whistles through the fabric shifting heat out of the tent itself.

The ultimate must be to pitch just the mesh inner tent itself as Hilleberg suggest, but this doesn't fit all scenarios where it 'might' rain during the night, or its truly hot until the sun goes down then the cold moves back in or it gets windy.

Buy the Hilleberg Kaitum 3/Helags 3 Mesh Inner Tent if you want to camp in a hot climate and convert your Kaitum or Helags into a summer haven rather than a hot house - or you want the ultimate in flexibility.
