For side sleepers looking to balance comfort and packability, the Sea to Summit Pursuit Self-Inflating Mat offers a well-considered design that accommodates a range of sleeping positions.
Sea to Summit says:
Designed for backpackers / adventurers who prioritise weight/ packed volume but who prefer simple SI construction over more complex air sleeping pads. The Pursuit is available in Contour or Rectangular shapes
Our Verdict
Weighing 990g, it’s impressively light for a self-inflating mat of this thickness. It uses Horizontal Delta Coring to remove 40% of the foam, creating supportive air-filled channels that reduce weight and bulk without sacrificing comfort. The rectangular shape provides more room to sprawl—something I appreciate as a restless sleeper .
The XPEL Valve System makes inflating and deflating refreshingly straightforward. Its flip-over design stops air from sneaking back during deflation, so packing up is less of a battle. While it doesn’t pack down as tightly as the most compact ultralight air mats, I’ve been impressed by how small it compresses for a self-inflating mat of this type.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
