Our Verdict
These are soft shell style cold weather mounter trousers, made with Rab's tough stretch Matrix fabric; these are hard wearing and breathable. They have been treated with a DWR coating to help them repel water and dry quickly. High-wear areas, the seat, the knees and the in-step have been reinforced with a more durable Matrix fabric.
I'm happy to say that the Lochan Pants feature ventilation zips on the thighs; my last few hiking trousers have had these, and I've been spoilt; I'll only hike in pants that have them now. Being able to dump heat when you are working hard quickly is now a must for me.
They fit like a pair of jeans, they have belt loops, and they close with a button fastening. The inner waistband is a soft fleece-like material which feels comfortable.
They have two open hand pockets, again similar to jeans, but the Lochan also have two thigh pockets which can be zipped close and a zipped pocket in the seat of the pants.
Though Rab classes these as winter trousers, I get three season use out of these (thanks to the Venelaton zips), especially for multi-day trips in spring and summer. These are my go-to pants; I know they will shrug off wet weather; they are hardwearing and breathable, it's hard to fault them.
