First manufactured over 30 years ago, the Kinder Smock quickly became a favourite on the Sheffield climbing scene. Easily picked out against the dark gritstone, it's iconic shape meant it could be worn without interfering with a harness or belay device.
An unbroken link from past to present, the Kinder is as rugged and hard-wearing as before, still made from the classic Pertex fabric. Not ashamed to be neither fast nor light, there is nothing like the warm, reassuring feeling of throwing on your Kinder at a cold belay. Sometimes the old way is the best way.
Our Verdict
Rab's Kinder Smock was a classic the first time around so this modern version is bound to be a hit. Keeping the original style Rab have upgraded the materials with a Pertex Classic outer fabric which does an amazing job at keeping out the wind. In addition to this there is 270g of 650 Fill Power Down which gives this smock a nice, toasty warm feel.
The single kangaroo style pocket is large and has a soft lining for extra comfort but lacks zips so is not that secure. There is a small internal chest pocket with a zip though. A large zip up the side helps when putting the smock on or tacking it off. A drawstring toggle at the hem and Velcro tab cuffs help keep the warmth in and the elements out along with a high collar.
