Exped says:
The MegaMat Lite 12 combines the comfort of the MegaMat with the pack size and weight of a portable trekking mat. It is the ideal companion for backpacking, biking or kayaking trips and in a camping van—a mat for those who value pack size and convenience in equal measure.
With its 12 cm thickness and the additional insulation on the inside, the MegaMat Lite offers the best insulation from the ground. The 3D construction provides the largest possible sleeping surface. The top made of soft tricot Polyester provides a pleasant touch next-to-skin and additional insulation.
The Schnozzel Pumpbag provides quick and easy inflation of the MegaMat Lite. The practical pump bag can also be used as a waterproof pack sack for sleeping bag, clothing or other gear. The extra-large flat valve ensures quick deflation.
Our Verdict
The Exped MegaMat Lite 12 MW Sleeping Mat is fantastic for car campers who prioritise comfort.
This 12 cm thick mat provides exceptional cushioning and insulation from the ground. Its impressive R-value of 5.2 ensures warmth even in subzero conditions, making it suitable for year-round use. The 3D construction maximises the sleeping surface, while the soft tricot polyester top offers a cosy feel against the skin. This versatility makes it an excellent choice for a variety of outdoor activities.
Weighing 1134g, it's relatively light for its size and comfort level; though ultralight backpackers prefer lighter options, I would not want to carry it up a mountain. The packed size of 27 × 16 cm is reasonable for its thickness, fitting well in backpacks and many vehicles.
The Schnozzel Pumpbag is a clever addition, doubling as an inflation device and a waterproof stuff sack for other gear. This multi-functionality is a boon for weight-conscious travellers.
The 50D top and 75D bottom, both featuring TPU polyether film laminate for hydrolysis resistance, promise durability. Exped's use of Oeko-Tex® 100 certified materials and bluesign® certified insulation demonstrates its commitment to sustainability.
