Designed to thrive in harsh conditions, the Kunai 3P is built to deliver reliable, all-season performance without sacrificing comfort.
Nemo says:
Kunai™ is the most versatile option on the market for backpacking year-round. It's truly in a category of its own, able to handle everything from hot and humid days in the trees to frigid temps and exposure high in the mountains. If you're outfitting for an adventure that will take you across many landscapes and through a wide range of conditions, there's no better choice.
The thoughtfully engineered frame design, made with top-shelf DAC Featherlite® NSL poles and featuring an aggressively tapered tent profile, is built to shed wind, rain, and snow. Few tents are as adept in every season with a design this compact and lightweight. The current generation of our Kunai tent is updated with a reshaped entry area, higher volume vestibule, and larger convertible mesh panels on the sides of the inner tent.
Our Verdict
With its durable build and versatile design, the NEMO Kunai 3P is a strong choice for year-round trekking and mountaineering. The tapered profile and DAC Featherlite poles make it exceptionally stable in high winds and snow, though the fly doesn’t reach the ground, meaning it can’t be considered a full 4-season tent. A standout feature, however, is the “Pass Through Guy Outs,” which allows the internal poles to be staked directly into the floor—adding remarkable stability.
Internally, the tent’s four large, double-layer mesh windows can be unzipped for airflow, promoting excellent ventilation and minimising condensation. This feature gives the Kunai 3P flexibility in warm and colder conditions, supporting Nemo's 3 - 4 season claim. The Dimension-Polyant reinforced ripstop fabric feels robust enough for harsher climates, and the silicone-treated 15D nylon fly provides strong water resistance. At the same time, the tub floor construction ensures a dry interior in wet conditions.
Space-wise, the Kunai 3P feels remarkably roomy for a three-person tent but is exceptionally comfortable for two. The near-vertical walls and 112 cm peak height allow ample headroom, while the vestibule offers additional storage space and a spot for cooking in poor weather. Plenty of pockets, a gear loft, and lamp diffusing pockets make organisation easy.
At approximately 2.45 kg, the Kunai 3P is reasonably lightweight for its durability, making it ideal for those who need a resilient, dependable tent without excessive weight. The colour-coded pole system simplifies setup, and the Divvy Cube stuff sack allows easy load sharing.
Its taller profile may not fare as well as dome tents in extremely high winds, and it needs to be fully guyed to handle heavy snow. However, the Kunai 3P’s balance of durability, comfort, and adaptability makes it an exceptional choice for diverse and challenging adventures.
