A tough, adaptable tent that finally feels at home in the highlands as it does in the woods.
Nemo says:
Year-Round, Location-Spanning Versatility
The NEMO Kunai tent is the most versatile tent on the market for backpacking year-round. The first all-mountain tent in the category, Kunai stands apart by offering security and comfort from the glacier to the summit.
The Kunai tent is the most versatile option on the market for backpacking year-round. It's truly in a category of its own, able to handle everything from hot and humid days in the trees to frigid temps and exposure high in the mountains. If you're outfitting for an adventure that will take you across many landscapes and through a wide range of conditions, there's no better choice.
The thoughtfully engineered frame design, made with top-shelf DAC poles and featuring an aggressively tapered tent profile, is built to shed wind, rain, and snow. Few tents are as adept in every season with a design this compact and lightweight. The current generation of our Kunai tent is updated with a reshaped entry area, higher volume vestibule, and larger convertible mesh panels on the sides of the inner tent.
Our Verdict
Nemo has done a commendable job refining an already capable tent. The reshaped entry is subtle but genuinely easier to use when clambering in after a long, wet day. The expanded vestibule—while still on the smaller side—finally has room for a full-size pack without blocking the door. That said, with only one vestibule and one door, it’s not ideal for two larger adults sharing the space. For solo use, though, it feels spot on.
The standout update for me is the new mesh panels. They now cover more inner walls and can be fully zipped up for cold or windy nights, making the tent feel far more four-season-ready. On milder trips, you can unzip them to dramatically boost airflow. The difference in ventilation on humid nights is noticeable and very welcome.
At 1,754g, it’s not featherweight, but the trade-off is more than fair for the weather protection and build quality on offer. It’s solid in wind, shrugs off sleet, and confidently handles damp ground.
