A low-weight, low-profile waist pack to keep your essentials close at hand when going for shorter training runs, they also make excellent extra storage for hikers and backpackers who like a front pocket to store a phone, camera or snacks.
Montane says:
The GECKO WP 1+ securely hugs the waist with a stretch fit that limits movement and ensures comfort on the trail. The central compartment and two side stretch pockets have enough space for food, hydration and essential kit on short to moderate trail runs
Our Verdict
This lightweight pack is only 80 grams, but it’s surprisingly durable. It has been made from 70D cross light, so despite its low weight, it’s going to shrug off most abrasions. The ” hip fins” are made of a 4-way stretch material which is perfect for keeping your mobile phone in. It stretches around your phone and keeps it from bouncing around, so you know it's safe and won’t irritate you as you run.
For a waist pack that sits so close to the small of your back, the pack does a good job of moving moisture away from an area prone to get sweaty, helping you stay cool on the trail.
The strap used to fasten the gecko also has a good amount of stretch, so you have a good degree of movement without feeling constricted. It’s only a hook and loop closure that is adequate and holds well; any excess strap can be rolled around and held in place with small Velcro straps; it feels a little clumsy but keeps the pack looking neat.
