A spacious and hard-wearing, three-person backpacking tent that's affordable and reliable.

Kelty says:

No matter how far you're going, the Far Out backpacking tent lives up to its name. Travel light with lightweight aluminum poles and get ready to experience the best of the backcountry. The Stargazing Fly gives you a front row sleep under the stars, and rolls down tight to offer unmatched protection from the elements. The included footprint and pre-attached guylines offer extra weather resistance while the two door, two-vestibule design make it easy to move in and stretch out.

Our Verdict

At first, this tent looks a little too heavy for backpacking, but once you appreciate that the footprint is included, this becomes a very affordable, entry-level backpacking tent.

I like the new trend of roll-away fly sheets, which instantly add ventilation and stargazing opportunities. It's nice to get to camp, roll back the fly and appreciate the view whilst escaping the insects; useful at the height of summer, especially in mosquito season.

It's a straightforward, intuitive pitch. The lightweight Aluminium poles cross to give the tent its shape, and a ridge line pole creates internal space. The fly then attaches with straightforward adjustable buckles. The included ground sheet attaches very quickly but also can be left at home to save weight if needed. The tent floor, fly, and footprint are all made from an incredibly hard-wearing 68D polyester, so although heavy, this tent is hard-wearing and durable.

The vestibules are large; there is enough room for gear and space to cook without impeding entry to the tent's two doors. The D-shaped doors reach to the top of the tent, so entering and exiting is more graceful than other smaller two-person tents.

It's only drawback for me is the weight; you are trading weight for durability. You, of course, can split the weight with your tent buddies. This tent will cope with years of abuse at a very reasonable price. If you wish to try wild camping and are on a budget, this is an excellent choice if you are prepared to carry it.
