The Storm Mitts are waterproof, windproof and really well insulated. They are designed and built to withstand the cold, wet weather encountered in the mountains year-round.
Rab says
Looking for a versatile year-round glove? Our new Storm Mitt provides the warmth for cold mountain work, the moisture management for fast hikes and the feature set for reliable everyday use.
To cater for the full range of mountain conditions - warm and cold, wet and dry, active and static - our new Storm Mitt uses a carefully engineered combination of synthetic technologies. The shell is built from tough ripstop nylon with a waterproof and breathable Porelle® Dry polyurethane membrane. This is partnered with flexible Porelle® inserts, which are sandwiched between the shell and lining, to increase protection without compromising the through-flow of sweat. Warm, durable and highly breathable, the new mitt also features textured polyurethane reinforcements at the palm and thumb, plus a grip-friendly pre-curved fit with adjustable wrist straps and simple cinch-lock closures at the cuff.
While a mitt always trades a little dexterity for increased warmth, our new Storm Mitt comes with excellent flexibility, a user-friendly weight of just 135g and ultra-practical Stratus™ sheet insulation for versatile year-round use.
Our Verdict
Rab's 2020 Storm Mitts have a Porelle lining making them waterproof while the insulation comes from synthetic Stratus material Rab have used in a number of their jackets. The design and fabrics used in the Storm Mitt make them ideal for the cold, wet conditions you'd expect to encounter in the hills and mountains of Britain. This updated version is significantly lighter in weight than the previous model while the use of Stratus insulation is an upgrade in terms of both warmth and weight. The soft leather palms improve grip and the reinforcements improve durability massively.
The biggest problem I have with these mitts is the fact that the 'internal finger pockets' is essentially a glove lining. For me it feels strange and in my opinion defies the point of the mitt. It's not uncomfortable or less warm that I've noticed but it just doesn't work for me.
