One of the most comfortable self-inflating backpacking mattresses, the top-rated Trail Pro sleeping pad provides year-round camping comfort.

Thermarest says

For unprecedented comfort during your backcountry adventures, the Trail Pro brings year-round warmth and legendary Therm-a-Rest support. The self-inflating foam measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) and features our StrataCore construction, a design that provides the best warmth to weight ratio of any self-inflating foam construction. The Trail Pro’s 4.4 R-value allows adventurers to enjoy backpacking and camping year round. The versatile self-inflating pad features the high-performance WingLock valve, allowing the pad to inflate three times faster thanks to a larger opening and one-way inflation. Like all Therm-a-Rest pads, the Trail Pro is made in market to ensure quality and minimize environmental impact. The pad includes a compact stuff sack.

Our Verdict

The Therm-a-Rest 2020 Trail Pro is a warm self inflating mattress that is great for 3 season use providing comfort and warmth, though it is pretty bulky when packed. It certainly isn't an ultralight mat, but it's not meant to be. It's a good choice for trips where weight and bulk are not so much of an issue but where durability and insulation from the cold ground is. The Trail Pro mats use 50D fabric on the base which is nearly double what it is on an ultra lightweight mattress making it much more durable and resistant to puncture. The introduction of the new WingLock valve gives you safe and easy inflation and rapid deflation which is a serious upgrade.

The Trail Pro has a longer straight section in the torso area, this increases the width and reduces the gap when two mats are coupled together. The Trail Pro mats also have an enlarged 'rail' around the perimeter, this is just significant enough to stop you rolling off in the night. The mat is self inflating, by simply opening the valve it will self inflate in a few minutes, but you'll usually have to give it a couple of breaths to finish it off.

Packed Size probably makes it questionable for backpacking but for basecamp use its a good choice, its warm, comfortable and durable - the Womens version is warmer again than the Mens.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
