A tough, lightweight back-country mat, perfect for 3 season adventures.

Big Agnes says:

A light and compact insulated pad with a smooth and stable sleeping surface of vertical baffles, made using sustainably-sourced materials. Stay warm with an insulation system featuring THERMOLITE®, along with heat reflective film for maximum efficiency. Lightweight warmth, comfort, and reliability at an awesome value!

Our Verdict

Big Agnes’s Divide Insulated Sleeping Mat is an incredibly comfortable mat that works really well for side sleepers; the 8cm mat keeps you off the ground and well cushioned. The two outer baffles are oversized and help you stay on the mat at night, which is especially good for restless sleepers.

The mat is rectangular, which I prefer over mats that taper at the feet; I always find that my legs have slipped off during the night on narrower mats, especially if I'm using a quilt. A rectangular mat will add some weight, but I'll happily carry a few more grams for a good night’s sleep.

A Note on size, if you are looking to use this mat in a two-person tent, please check the tent size you intend to use this mat with; many two-person tents are not rectangular in shape and often taper in, so it’s best to check.

The mat isn’t made from super ultra-light materials but from more durable ripstop nylon; again, I would rather have a robust, slightly heavier mat that I know I can be a little less careful with.

The THERMOLITE Insulation and bonded heat reflective film don’t make any noise as you toss and turn, so you (and anyone camping near) will not be disturbed as you toss and turn during the evening.

Big Agnes’s Divide Insulated Sleeping mat is my go-to this year for its price, warmth-to-weight ratio, and durability.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
