Our Verdict
The Outdoor Research Deviator Fleece Half Zip is an impressively versatile mid-layer designed for high-output activities in cool conditions. Its hybrid construction combines quick-drying, moisture-wicking polyester in the core with a flexible polyester-spandex blend at the arms and underarms. This thoughtful design keeps warmth where it’s most needed and allows for superb freedom of movement.
The VerticalX Octa insulation is a highlight for me—lighter than typical fleece insulation, it provides warmth without the bulk, making it ideal for trail running and winter hikes. The Deviator’s 13 cm front zip helps with quick ventilation, while thumb loops and a zippered chest pocket add functionality. The fleece also offers UPF 30 protection and has reflective logo details for better visibility.
This fleece is lightweight yet durable, at around 307 grams for a medium. It’s warm and breathable, keeping me comfortable even when my pace picks up. The Deviator Fleece Half Zip is an adaptable, efficient layer, great for active pursuits when temperatures dip.
