The Platypus DayCap In-Bottle Filter seamlessly ensures clean, safe hydration, making it an essential companion for hikers using wide-mouth bottles like Nalgene and Hydro Flask.
Platypus says:
You’ve already got the water bottle, now you just need the clean water. The DayCap In-Bottle Filter seamlessly fits onto three popular wide-mouth water bottles—Nalgene®, Hydro Flask®, and Yeti® Yonder™—and transforms them into fast, safe and incredibly easy water filters. The removable filter utilizes the same hollow fiber technology as our award-winning backpacking filter systems to filter water safely and quickly. By only lightly pulling water through the spout, the speed of the filter allows you to drink as you normally would from your bottle. If the flow begins to slow down, simply shake your bottle with the DayCap and filter attached to clean it and restore the flow rate. Made of premium materials, the cap is durable, and features a sturdy loop for secure hanging and carrying. The spout is shaped to optimize flow and provide a natural drink experience. It has a flip-up leak-free cover that stays out of the way when you’re drinking. In cap-only mode, the DayCap works as a perfect everyday cap for your bottle when you’re not on the trail. With the filter on, whether it’s a day hike or a backpacking trip, the DayCap In-Bottle Filter makes worry-free hydration as easy as scooping and drinking.
Our Verdict
The Platypus DayCap In-Bottle Filter is an invaluable tool that transforms your Nalgene, Hydro Flask, and Yeti Yonder bottles into an easy and reliable way to ensure clean drinking water on the go. This lightweight filter cap, weighing only 65 grams, seamlessly attaches to your wide-mouthed bottle, transforming it into a reliable filtration system without adding bulk.
This filter works best for day hikers looking to reduce the amount of water they carry. It's not something I would take on a multi-day hike, as filtering from the In-Bottle Filter into a pot to cook with, for example, isn't practical. Platypus DayCap is just for on-the-go hydration, not processing water for camp.
In the field, the DayCap delivers excellent performance. The hollow fibre filtration system works impressively fast, allowing you to drink directly from your bottle at a natural pace. I found that the flow rate is, as the brand suggests, around 1 litre per minute, which is more than sufficient.
I’m a fan of filters you can maintain on the trail without bringing additional kit; the Platypus DayCap is in this category. You simply ¼ fill the bottle (with clean or unfiltered water), then give it a simple shake for 30 seconds or so.
