Our Verdict
For weight-conscious mountaineers who need an insulated layering piece for bitter bivies and belays, Patagonia's DAS Light Pants provide impressive warmth for the incredibly low weight. These minimalist insulated pants pack down tiny yet insulate effectively even when wet.
The key is Patagonia's innovative PlumaFill synthetic insulation, which mimics the lightweight loft of down clusters while maintaining warmth when exposed to moisture. This continuous insulation is sandwiched between a thin 10D recycled nylon face fabric treated with a weather-resistant finish.
An internal quilting construction maximises the lofting and warmth of the PlumaFill with minimal stitching. The DAS Lights should breathe reasonably well for an insulated layer despite having no zippers or vents.
The full-length side zips allow easy on/off over boots and crampons, while elastic cuffs and an adjustable waistband provide a solid fit. They deliver outstanding warmth for their packable weight and volume.
