A free standing dome tent with all the strength and durability you could possibly require. The Staika is a real four season tent and will stand up to some of the worst conditions imaginable where ever you decide to use it. Quality materials combined with top construction have resulted in a superb tent.
Hilleberg says:
The Staika is all about simple – but simple does not by any means equate to “sparse.” Easy to pitch, immensely stable, remarkably spacious, and quite light, the Staika is an excellent “go to” tent for any use where sturdy strength is the high priority. We originally designed the Staika for paddle tourers, who wanted a highly stable, fully free standing tent for handling tricky pitching conditions. Since then, it has garnered a large, loyal following amongst a wide assortment of other adventurers: mountaineers, polar travelers, and ski tourers find it a supremely stable base camp tent in all conditions; bicycle tourers love its simplicity and completely free standing construction; and even regular backpackers find great comfort in its roominess and relatively light weight as well as in its strength and stability.
Our Verdict
Hilleberg's Staika Tent is a strong and stable dome tent that can cope with the worst four season conditions you're willing to camp out in. The poles cross over providing stability in strong winds and the dome shape allows the tent to cope in even the heaviest snowfall. It isn't the lightest tent but you are getting an amazingly well made tent that will last for years. Once you've mastered putting the tent up it can be done quickly and easily even in poor conditions. The inner is already attached so it's ideal for wet conditions. It would benefit from more ventilation but this is almost a trade off for the level of protection it provides. The vestibules provide a decent amount of space for packs and kit and the inner is generous for two people.
This is a Black Label tent from the Hilleberg range which means you are getting the strongest most durable type of tent they make. It has thick Kerlon 1800 outer fabric and 10mm poles providing amazing levels of strength against the worst weather you'd expect to encounter. There is an obvious weight increase attached to these materials being used but they are designed to withstand the strongest winds in mountainous and polar environments. This tent may well be overkill for most people's camping needs but if you are searching for a tent for winter epics or adventures in some of the harshest environments in the world then it is well worth it.
