The Blacktail tent offers campers who don't go out as regularly a solid design and well made tent. With a large sized inner and practical mix of mesh and fabric - they are a bit heavier than other tents in the range but they are more durable and offer fantastic value for money.
Big Agnes says
The Blacktail two, three, and four-person tents are light enough for the backcountry, and strong enough for the front country. A tried and true shelter with excellent value for backpackers who want a super comfortable tent after a long day on the trail. The Blacktail series of tents offers spacious sleeping areas with easy access through two, side-entry doors and vestibules, making early morning entry and exit with a tent-mate more stealth when nature calls.
Our Verdict
Big Agnes' 2020 Blacktail 4 Tent is a good sized 4 person backpacking tent with two entrances and two porches - one of the most convenient designs available. While it's not among the lightest in this design it has good head height, internal space and offers a more durable set up with the choice of materials used.
The tent uses a classic pole design that is strong enough to stand up to the weather while providing a good space inside. The materials used are heavier than Big Agnes normally use but this results in a stronger, more hardwearing and less expensive shelter. The inner tent is a good mix of fabric and mesh so that there's protection from wind and rain, and it also has good ventilation making the tent suitable for a range of conditions.
With two entrances, two porches and plenty of internal storage the Blacktail series are well thought out tents that come in at a decent price - Big Agnes has achieved this by taking one step back from the ultra-light, ultra-expensive fabrics used in other designs.
