Our Verdict
The Outdoor Research Bug Bucket is ideal for summer hikes and evening camps when the mozzies come out in force. Weighing in at just 66 grams, it’s easy to forget in your pack. The no-see-um mesh stows neatly away when not needed and can be deployed in seconds when the insects descend. It provides full coverage for the face and neck without clinging, and because it sits further from your skin than a separate net, it’s far more comfortable to wear for extended periods.
The recycled nylon fabric is light, quick to dry, and surprisingly breathable—even with the mesh down. The brim offers decent sun protection without drooping, and the UPF 40 rating gives some added peace of mind on exposed ground. The mesh is a touch dark in low light, but that’s a small compromise for such effective bug defence.
